BNC is used as a gateway to an IRC Server. There are quite a few advantages in using BNC besides being able to use a host other than the one assigned by your Internet Service Provider (ISP). BNCs also protect you from various types of Denial-Of-Service (DOS) attacks such as IMCP, Winnuke and other exploits. Connecting to a BNC changes the IP that is visible to users on IRC to the IP of the computer or shell which from where it is running. The plus of BNC is that it still allows you to IRC as you normally would (DCC, Channels, Private Messages, etc), but prevents malicious individuals from attacking your computer.
